How to become an nbn reseller

Jacqueline Walden

As an MSP or Business IT provider you’re probably used to customers are asking about business nbn services, but chances are you can’t always meet this demand.

Instead of referring them to a telco, or letting these opportunities slip away, you could become an nbn reseller. As an nbn reseller, a.k.a. ‘retail service provider’, you can sell data services from the nbn under your own brand, with your own plans and pricing.

The process of becoming and nbn reseller is straightforward, but many MSPs don’t know how to get started. Let's explore how you can tap into this market.

What is an nbn reseller?

Authorised nbn resellers sell nbn to retail customers (households and businesses), and take on the responsibility of provisioning, supporting, and billing those customers.

The nbn is an independent wholesale data network. It supplies to all of Australia’s nbn retail service providers (RSPs) – big and small – on an equal footing. This means you get access to the same suite of products as the major telcos.

As an nbn reseller you can differentiate by offering a range of internet plans, speeds, and add-on services. To do this effectively, you need to be able to package and bundle your nbn services - giving customers the flexibility they need in today’s digital world.

How the nbn works for resellers

To grasp what nbn retailers do, it’s crucial to understand the nbn network delivery chain. This chain includes three main components:

  1. Customer devices: This is the technology that your customers use to access the internet: such as their mobile phone, tablet or computer. Retail Service Providers will often provide a wi-fi modem to their end customers, making it easy for them to connect all their devices.
  2. The nbn connection device: This is the technology that links the customer  to the nbn. Often it is a box on the wall or at the boundary of a property that customers connect their modem into. The type of device required will depend on the type of nbn connection. (More on nbn access types later).
  3. Service  provider network: Internet service providers need to ‘plug in’ to the nbn via a Point of Interconnect (POI), this allows them to serve customers within that POI’s coverage region. The nbn criss-crosses Australia via 121 POIs.

For complete national coverage, service providers need to build their own fibre connectivity and backhaul to all 121 locations. (Or they connect to Telcoinabox once, and get instantnational coverage).

The benefits of selling nbn services

1.     Go national – expand your market

With over 12 million Australian homes and businesses connected to the nbn, there’s a massive market just waiting for you to tap into. For smaller, local providers this means you can start to serve customers Australia-wide.

The nbn spans 322 business fibre zones across the country, including 142 regional centres, enabling resellers to offer data connectivity to almost any business or retail customer.

Reliable internet is also a foundation for other business technologies. With high speed internet in place, you can cross sell your customers comprehensive solutions, including managed IT, voice, and cloud services.

2.     Win customers away from the major telcos

Now is a great time to become an nbn retailer. For many years while the nbn was being built, the major telcos dominated the market. Now that the roll-out is complete, Aussies are open to switching providers to find a better deal.

Recent industry data shows that both retail and business customers are switching to ‘challenger’ providers that can offer better service and better value.

Telstra’s market share has fallen from more than 50% in 2020 to less than 40% today , with small providers increasingly taking market share.

3.     Offer flexible connectivity options

The nbn is delivered via a wide range of access methods (we mentioned these earlier). It is critical as a retail provider that you can deliver as many of these nbn connection types as possible. This will allow you to serve customers in more locations, and offer the full range of internet speeds.

By offering plans with varying speeds and access methods, you can attract a broader clientele, enhancing customer satisfaction and increasing your sales potential in a competitive market.

The nbn access types include:

Fibre to the Node (FTTN):

Pros: Widely available, generally cheaper to install than FTTP or FTTC.

Cons: Slower speeds compared to fibre-based options, susceptible to interference.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP):

Pros: Fastest and most reliable option, with high download and upload speeds.

Cons: Most expensive to install, not available in all areas.

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC):

Pros: Faster than FTTN, with good download speeds.

Cons: Uses copper wires for the final connection, which can impact speed and reliability.

Fibre to the Building (FTTB):

Pros: High-speed internet, reliable connection, future-proof technology, cost-effective for multiple units, increases property value.

Cons: High installation costs, limited to multi-dwelling units, dependent on building management, potential shared bandwidth issues, complex upgrades.

When you deliver your nbn services through Telcoinabox you can offer all of the above connection types, plus Opticomm connectivity.

Opticomm allows you to provide coverage in areas where nbn services are unavailable, enabling you to expand your reach into underserved markets and boosting your overall data offering.

4.     Create your own plans & pricing

As an nbn Retail Service Provider (RSP) you get to keep more of the profits. The monthly nbn service revenue stays with you – rather than going to another telco.

According to recent data, the average prices for nbn plans have increased over the past 12 months. Entry-level speeds are typically charged at $75per month, median plans at approximately $95, and higher-tier plans reaching about $114.

By strategically positioning your pricing and service offerings, you can maximise profitability and enhance customer retention.
